چکیده

BACKGROUND Cerebral air embolism is a life-threatening complication of various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Hyperbaric oxygenation is considered to be the cornerstone of its treatment. CASE DESCRIPTION We report a patient with cerebral air embolism after endoscopy of a perineal abscess. Immediate CT imaging confirmed the diagnosis and MRI showed cortically localized areas of restricted diffusion along the gyri. Since hyperbaric oxygenation was not available, moderate hypothermia was applied for neuroprotection. CONCLUSION This case illustrates a rare complication of endoscopic interventions, and imaging characteristics of cerebral air embolism were described. Furthermore, we discuss the potential utility of therapeutic hypothermia in cerebral air embolism.

Therapeutic Hypothermia for Acute Air Embolic Stroke

We describe a 65-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with acute cerebral air embolism after receiving computed tomography guided lung biopsy. The patient presented with muscle strengths of 0/5 in left arm and 3/5 in left leg, aphasia, and a right pneumothorax. Our concern was to improve the patient’s neurological function, while ensuring stability in a patient who possibly ha...

Unexpected Fatal Hypernatremia after Successful Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation with Therapeutic Hypothermia: A Case Report

Central diabetes insipidus (DI), characterized by unexpected fatal hypernatremia, is a rare complication after successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation with therapeutic hypothermia, but may be potentially fatal if recognition is delayed. We describe here a patient who experienced cardiac arrest due to a pulmonary embolism, followed by successful resuscitation after induction of therapeutic hypo...

Successful fibrinolytic and therapeutic hypothermic management of cardiac arrest following massive pulmonary embolism

Massive pulmonary embolism (MPE) with hemodynamic instability is a clinical condition with a poor prognosis and high mortality rates. There are no definitive treatment options for cardiac arrest due to MPE. A 52-year-old female presented at our emergency department with cardiac arrest, and a 62-year-old female presented after achieving return of spontaneous circulation of cardiac arrest from a ...
